Woven Basket Materials, Compared: Rope, Seagrass, Hyacinth, Rattan & More
A woven basket's material decides almost everything about it: whether it stands up or slumps, whether it can live in a bathroom, and how much it can carry. Six materials cover this index.
Cotton rope: the soft one
Coiled and stitched cotton rope makes a soft-sided basket: flexible, light, scratch-free against furniture, and able to squeeze onto a shelf or fold away. It slumps when empty and looks best in use. The forgiving all-rounder, and the default for nurseries and toy duty.
Seagrass and water hyacinth: the natural fibres
Seagrass is a marine grass woven into baskets with genuine stiffness and a pale, natural finish. Water hyacinth uses the plant's thick stems for a chunkier, more rustic weave, often over a frame. Both hold a crisp shape; both want to stay dry, and neither belongs in a steamy, splashy corner for long.
Rattan and wicker: the rigid ones
Rattan is a woody vine — light, rigid and strong — and the classic basket material for pieces that must hold their shape. Wicker is not a material at all but the woven construction itself; a 'wicker' basket's strands might be rattan, willow or synthetic, and the listing's material line is where to confirm which.
Jute: the rustic fibre
Jute — the burlap fibre — weaves into coarse, textured baskets with a farmhouse look. It is strong and inexpensive, and it dislikes water, so jute belongs with dry goods: yarn, throws, toys, post.
Choosing in one minute
Soft and forgiving: cotton rope. Crisp natural shape: seagrass or hyacinth. Rigid and traditional: rattan. Rustic texture: jute. Anything that lives near water: none of the natural fibres — choose with the room, not just the photo.
