Gold Plated vs Gold Vermeil (and Gold Filled): What's the Difference?
Three pairs of gold hoops can look identical in photos and be built three completely different ways. The construction — plated, vermeil or filled — is what you're actually paying for.
Gold plated: a surface of gold
Gold plating is a thin layer of gold applied over another metal — often brass or another base metal, sometimes sterling silver. The layer is thin enough to be measured in fractions of a micron on fashion jewellery, and it is a surface: where it rubs, it eventually wears through to the metal beneath.
That doesn't make plated earrings a bad buy. It makes them a buy with a lifespan and a care routine: keep them dry, keep them away from perfume and lotions, take them off to sleep and shower, and the surface lasts far longer.
Gold vermeil: thicker gold, over silver
Vermeil (pronounced ver-MAY) is a specific construction, not a marketing word: a layer of gold over a sterling silver core. Under the US Federal Trade Commission's definition, vermeil gold must be at least 10 karats and at least 2.5 microns thick — several times thicker than typical fashion plating — and the core must be sterling silver.
Because the core is a precious metal, a vermeil piece whose gold has worn at an edge shows silver, not base metal, and vermeil generally costs more than plated and less than gold filled or solid gold.
Gold filled: the durability step
Gold filled is not a coating process like plating: a much thicker layer of gold is mechanically bonded to a base-metal core under heat and pressure. The gold layer is thick enough that gold-filled jewellery is commonly sold as suitable for daily wear, and it resists wear-through far longer than plating.
How to read a listing
Look for the construction word and the base metal, in that order: '14K gold plated' (gold over an often-unstated base), 'gold plated sterling silver' or 'vermeil' (gold over silver), '14K gold filled' (thick bonded layer). If a listing says only 'gold' with a colour and no construction word, assume the lightest construction and price it accordingly.
Every product page in this index shows the material exactly as its listing states it, so the comparison is on the page rather than buried in marketing copy.
